ZIF SSD
Troubleshooting / FAQ
The ZIF SSD is not recognized by my
laptop.
- Double check the cable to make sure it is plugged in right,
with the cable contacts facing the right direction both on the
drive and on your laptop. Make sure the ZIF cable is inserted
all the way in and the lever is latched.
- Make sure the ZIF cable is completely clean and free of dust or dirt,
which can prevent good contact.
- Try the drive in another laptop if possible.
- Go to the Disk Management Console to see if the SSD is detected.
The new SSD may need to be initialized, partitioned and formatted
before it can be used. To access the Disk Management Console
in Windows Click Start > Run, then type diskmgmt.msc.
Can’t
Install software onto the SSD.
- Make sure to initialize, partition and format the drive using
Disk Management Console before trying to install software. To
access the Disk Management Console in Windows Click Start >
Run, then type diskmgmt.msc.
SSD Performance
is Very Slow
- The drive is probably operating in a slower IDE DMA/PIO Mode
than it should be. There’s an article on how to check
and fix that here,
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/check-your-transfer-mode-to-boost-computer-speed/
- The drive may suddenly slow down permanently for no apparent
reason. The most likely cause is that if the drive generates
CRC errors in DMA mode your laptop may revert to the slower
PIO mode without notifying the user. To fix this, first back
up all your data to another storage device (clone the whole
drive to another drive if possible). Open Device Manager, then
right click the primary IDE channel and click uninstall. This
forces a reboot. After the reboot, Windows announces that a
new driver has been installed and a reboot is required. Reboot
again. After doing this, the channel should now be back in UDMA
Mode 5. You can verifiy this in Device Manager after the second
reboot.
SSD shows
up as only 24MB Capacity.
- You may have split the drive into two partitions (ie. two
logical drives such as C: and D:). Re-partition the drive using
Disk Management Console. To access the Disk Management Console
in Windows Click Start > Run, then type diskmgmt.msc.
- This can also be caused by a firmware issue, so the drive
may need to be replaced.
